 Character: A many-sided fell with a different feel depending on whcih valley you choose to climb it from, it has a rocky summit with some impressive drops and cliffs on the Ennerdale side and lots of rock climbing on Pillar Rock, the pinnacle from which the fell gets its name. WasdaleWeb's opinion: A great fell and best done as part of the Mosedale Horseshoe; a walk which involves ascending Black Sail Pass, walking the ridge to Pillar, across to Scoat fell and onto Yewbarrow to finish the day. I tend to favour doing this walk in reverse starting with Yewbarrow as the weather tends then to be on your back, but I am in the minority for using this approach. Approaches: Commonly climbed via Black Sail Pass and along the ridge as part of the Horseshoe. The fell can also be approached from Ennerdale although this tends to mean a long walk-in. From Wasdale it can be climbed via Wind Gap but this is loose scree and not pleasant to ascend or descend, some people would also use Dore Head screes but this is even worse in my opinion. If the horsehoe is not being attempted and Pillar is your only goal for the day I would recomend going up via Blackcombe head (not a marked path but a pleasant scrambly approach) and then back down the ridge to Black Sail, or going up and down the same way from Black Sail Pass behind Kirkfell

Myself (Hugh) and my wife (Nadine) spent a superb day on the Mosedale Horseshoe last Saturday (18th sept 2004) here are a few of the Photos we took!! The weather was kind if a little windy in places, as you will see from some of the photos. The best bit about it was that it was our wedding anniversary and although we are quite seasoned walkers in the area, neither of us had climbed Pillar before.

Hi, Here is a pic of me and the dog on pillar summit, this was on Monday 8 Nov. and as you can see the weather was clear, warm with plenty of sun. The ascent was started from Overbeck bridge at 9am and we decended via Pillar Rock and John Wilson Robinson's cairn to Wasdale Head,getting back to the car at Also I never met another living soul on the whole walk,very unusual for such a nice day. My wife, Sue and myself were in Wasdale during the week beginning 23rd October and celebrated our 1st wedding anniversary on the 26th October with a great walk up onto Black Sail Pass and towards Pillar. Although we didn't make it to the summit, we did enjoy some fantastic views. The evening was spent over a wonderful meal in the restaurant in the Wasdale Head Inn, a great way to end a great day.
